"AIDS Walk Toronto Day"

September 22, 2002

WHEREAS: this year marks the 13th annual AIDS Walk Toronto, a local fundraising event and awareness project that is recognized as Canada's largest Walk. Attracting thousands of people, including more than 250 community and corporate teams, this event benefits the AIDS Committee of Toronto and other local AIDS service organizations in our community; and
WHEREAS: in 2001, an estimated 15,000 people participated in the walk and together they raised over $500,000. Since its inception, the Walk has raised almost $7 million to benefit the AIDS Committee of Toronto and its partner agencies who provide essential services to people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS thoughout our large and diverse city; and
WHEREAS: with the slogan "AIDS Costs", this massive event provides an opportunity to increase public awareness and knowledge of HIV/AIDS and the important work of the AIDS Committee of Toronto and other AIDS service organizations; and
WHEREAS: AIDS Walk Toronto demonstrates the compassion and caring of people of all ages, from all backgrounds and walks of life who come together with corporate sponsors to participate in this event to raise funds and make a positive difference in the fight against the impact of AIDS.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim September 22, 2002 as "AIDS Walk Toronto Day" and encourage everyone to participate in this celebration of community spirit, fun and festivities and make this the most successful Walk to date.
