"Aplastic Anemia & Myelodysplasia Awareness Day"

October 16, 2002

WHEREAS: aplastic anemia is a rare but extremely serious life-threatening disorder that results when the bone marrow fails to produce blood cells, and myelodysplasia is similar to aplastic anemia in that production of blood cells is decreased however, blood cells which are produced may not function properly; and
WHEREAS: the Aplastic Anemia and Mylodysplasia Association of Canada strives to support individuals and families coping with these disorders, together with increased public awareness, fundraising for research and sponsoring blood donor clinics; and
WHEREAS: recent scares and public misperceptions often make it diffcult to recruit platelet and bone marrow donors, and the rarity of both disorders lends to the importance of disseminating information to both patients and professionals; and
WHEREAS: the Aplastic Anemia and Myelodysplasia Association of Canada will be hosting an Awareness Day and blood donor clinics during the week of October 13th - October 19th, to educate people about these disorders.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 16, 2002 as "Aplastic Anemia & Myelodysplasia Awareness Day" in the City of Toronto, and encourage everyone to find out more about these disorders.
