"Big Brothers/Big Sisters Month"

September 2002

WHEREAS: for many years, Big Brothers of Toronto and Big Sisters of Toronto have operated separately to provide young boys and girls with guidance, support and companionship. In 2002 these two organizations joined together to serve more children in our community, and to date more than 125,000 boys and girls have been matched with a Big Brother or a Big Sister; and
WHEREAS: these young boys and girls, who face challenges, reap tremendous value from the influence of a positive mentor. Big Brothers of Toronto/Big Sisters of Toronto is a not-for-profit organization that relies heavily on the strength and dedication of volunteers who, through their commitment and support, make it possible to provide this invaluable service; and
WHEREAS: this year's goal is to recruit 250 new Big Brothers and Big Sisters across the City of Toronto, to participate in various programs, including the school program for as little as one hour per week.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim September 2002 as "Big Brothers/Big Sisters Month" and encourage the men and women of Toronto to become involved with this very worthwhile organization.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
