"Bike Week"
June 1 to 9, 2002
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto is recognized as a bicycle-friendly City. In Toronto there are 939,000 cyclists over the age of 15, who collectively make approximately 3,174,000 trips per week. Toronto offers bicycle parking, more than 150 kilometres of beautiful bike paths and 72 kilometres of on-street bike lanes; and |
| WHEREAS: |
while cycling is a fun and healthy pastime, it is also an efficient and environmentally friendly means of transportation; and

| WHEREAS: |
since 1989, Bike Week has been celebrated by the many people in our great City who cycle to work or school, or just for pleasure; and |
| WHEREAS: |
there are many cycling-related community events and activities taking place across Toronto to celebrate Bike Week, including free breakfasts, group rides, bike races and bicycle celebrations; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto recognizes the need for clean, cost-effective transportation and supports the Toronto Cycling Committee in its endeavours. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 1 to 9, 2002 as "Bike Week" and encourage everyone to get outside and ride! |
