"Breast Cancer Awareness Month"
October 2002
| WHEREAS: |
breast cancer is a major health problem that causes untold suffering and loss of life. Every year thousands of women are diagnosed with this devastating disease, and it is estimated that 20,500 Canadian women will develop breast cancer in 2002 and 5,400 are expected to die from it; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization that is committed to supporting advancement in breast cancer research, prevention, education, diagnosis and treatment; and |
| WHEREAS: |
it is important for women to seek early detection and treatment, and on October 31st, the Foundation will host the 16th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day, one of the largest information forums in Ontario that promotes awareness, and raises funds for vital research and programs; and |
| WHEREAS: |
last year more than $200,000 was raised and more than 1,500 participants had a unique opportunity to hear and question breast cancer experts from across North America, and visit the resource centre to gather information and speak with representatives from outreach programs, support groups, community agencies, screening centres and hospitals; and |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 2002 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" to recognize the tremendous work of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and its dedicated volunteers, and encourage everyone to increase awareness and support this very worthy cause. |
