WHEREAS: the arts are a unifying force that enhance our quality of life and add to the cultural and social development of our communities; and
WHEREAS: in 1987 Nicholas Goldschmidt began to formulate his vision for a Choral Festival with the first international event being held in 1989, followed by a second in 1993. This year marks the third festival and Nicholas Goldschmidt has continued as the Artistic Director for all three events; and

The Festival is a unique event that strives to provoke an interest in choral music within a broad range of community, and between May 31 and June 22, 2002, thirty-four concerts will be held in venues across the city.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 2002 as "Toronto International Choral Festival Month" to honour Nicholas Goldschmidt for his vision and tremendous contribution to the arts, and to recognize the cultural significance and importance of choral music. I encourage everyone to participate in and celebrate this enjoyable and outstanding musical event.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
