"Emergency Medical Services Week"

May 19 to 25, 2002

WHEREAS: emergency medical services is a vital public service with teams of emergency medical personnel ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and
WHEREAS: access to quality emergency care administered by emergency medical staff dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury; and
WHEREAS: emergency medical services teams consist of emergency physicians and nurses, paramedics, firefighters, educators, administrators and others, and these professionals have traditionally served as the safety net of Canada's health care system; and
WHEREAS: members of emergency medical services teams engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their lifesaving skills so that Canadians can benefit daily from the knowledge of these highly trained and skilled individuals.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 19 to 25, 2002 as "Emergency Medical Services Week" in recognition and appreciation of our valued emergency medical services professionals. I encourage our community to participate in the activities and celebrate the accomplishments of Toronto's Emergency Medical Services staff during this week.
