"National Flag of Canada Day"

February 15, 2002

WHEREAS: this year marks the 37th anniversary of Canada's distinctive red and white maple leaf flag. On Feburary 15, 1965, the Canadian flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill in Ottawa; and
WHEREAS: today, the distinctive Canadian flag is a familiar sight in towns and cities across our country, and an enduring symbol of our national pride, recognized around the world; and
WHEREAS: the people of our great City are proud to participate in the national flag's 37th anniversary. Toronto is recognized as the most culturally diverse City in the world, and the place where people from many different countries choose to live together in peace and harmony. The Canadian flag represents our shared values and our sense of common purpose and community. It is a symbol of our Canadian identity; and
WHEREAS: on this special day, while we salute the national flag of Canada and the values it represents, I encourage the people of Toronto to stand up for their democratic rights, and work to preserve the quality of life which is so treasured by each and every one in our great City.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim February 15, 2002 as "National Flag of Canada Day" and encourage the residents of Toronto to show their appreciation for each other and for this great nation of Canada.
