"Holocaust Education Week"

October 30 to November 11, 2002

WHEREAS: this 22nd annual Holocaust Education Week allows us time to reflect on the atrocities of the past and to honour the memory of the millions of men, women and children who perished or suffered during the Holocaust; and
WHEREAS: it is essential that we educate our children to learn the lessons of the past through programs and initiatives in synagogues, schools, libraries and churches throughout our communities, to help them develop a deeper understanding of their responsibility for the future; and
WHEREAS: these unimaginable horrors must never be repeated. We must work to ensure that our communities exist in racial harmony and only through remembrance, education and understanding of the Holocaust can public awareness be heightened, and religious discrimination, racism and prejudice eliminated.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 30 to November 11, 2002 as "Holocaust Education Week" to recognize and applaud the Holocaust Centre of Toronto, UJA Federation on its tireless efforts to ensure that this horrendous time in history is never forgotten.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
