"Independent Living Day"

December 3, 2002

WHEREAS: with the theme "Independent Living and Sustainable Livelihoods", Independent Living Centres in Toronto and across Canada are recognizing December 3, 2002 as United Nations International Day of Disabled Persons; and
WHEREAS: the disabled community in Toronto make a tremendous contribution to the success of our city as entrepreneurs, decision-makers, employees, musicians, artists, volunteers, parents and grandparents, and we recognize their ability and willingness to contribute to the economic growth and the social development of our communities; and
WHEREAS: for persons with disabilities, their future depends on the success of the Independent Living movement and an individual's commitment and willingness to contribute to the success of the community by participating to their full potential in all aspects of life.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim December 3, 2002 as "Independent Living Day" in the City of Toronto to recognize the important work of the Independent Living Resource Centres and the members of the Independent Living movement, and encourage everyone to be aware of the many contributions made to our community by persons with disabilities.
