"Injured Workers' Day"

June 1, 2002

WHEREAS: the Greater Toronto Area has a workforce of over two million people; and
WHEREAS: each year, workers in various occupations are injured or killed in their workplaces, or die as a result of occupational disease; and
WHEREAS: workplace injuries, deaths and diseases have an enormous human cost to workers and families of workers, as well as all of society; and
WHEREAS: these injuries and deaths are unnecessary and preventable.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 1, 2002 as "Injured Workers' Day" to increase public awareness of the impact of work-related injuries, deaths and diseases, and. encourage employers and workers to continue to work together to make all workplaces safe and accident free.
