"Irish Heritage and Cultural Appreciation Month"

March, 2002

WHEREAS: Irish Heritage and Cultural Appreciation Month recognizes the significant contributions Irish Canadians have made to the life and success of our great City; and
WHEREAS: the courage and determination of people of Irish descent who immigrated to Canada and other countries is a success story worth celebrating; and
WHEREAS: nowhere is this more evident than in Toronto, where over half a million citizens of Irish heritage make their home; and
WHEREAS: every March, the Irish community celebrates its patron saint and its rich heritage with a month-long calendar of events, the most popular of which is the St. Patrick's Day Parade, enjoyed each year by thousands of Torontonians of all ages and from all walks of life.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim March 2002 as "Irish Heritage and Cultural Appreciation Month" in the City of Toronto.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
