"Jazz Week"

June 21 to 30, 2002

WHEREAS: the Downtown Jazz Festival is a premier musical event and one of the most successful festivals in North America; and
WHEREAS: now in its 16th year, this much anticipated event is the highlight of the summer season. It is a world-class Festival that encompasses evry style of jazz, showcases more than 1,500 talented international musicians at more than 40 venues throughout Toronto, and attracts more than 700,000 visitors from Canada and around the world to our city; and
WHEREAS: for ten exciting days, our hearts are touched and our lives enriched as Toronto comes alive with the sound of jazz music. Not only does this Festival enhance our City's fabulous music scene, it also contributes to the cultural, social and economic success of Toronto, and adds to our reputation as a truly world-class and vibrant City.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 21 to 30, 2002 as "Jazz Week", and encourage everyone to participate in and celebrate this enjoyable and outstanding musical event.
