"Men's Health Awareness Week"

June 10 to 16, 2002

WHEREAS: it is important for all males regardless of age to become more informed about their health and related risks, and to take a more responsible attitude toward their health and well-being; and
WHEREAS: Men's Health Awareness Week is an international event involving many countries including Canada, United States, United Kingdom and Australia, that promotes men's awareness on the importance of early detection and treatment of disease, and other health and lifestyle issues that can have a devastating impact; and
WHEREAS: in 1999, the Toronto Men's Health Network was established as a non-profit organization to promote equal access to health services and resources for males of all ages, religions backgrounds and walks-of-life in our large and culturally diverse community.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 10 to 16, 2002 as "Men's Health Awareness Week" in the City of Toronto, to increase public awareness of preventable health problems and, encourage and support males of all ages and cultural backgrounds to give greater priority and attention to their health.
