"National Access Awareness Week"
May 27 to June 2, 2002
| WHEREAS: |
over 17% of Toronto's 2.5 million residents have some form of disability, and there is a need for greater awareness, understanding and recognition of the needs, capabilities and potential; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the daily lives of people with disabilities are adversely affected by the barriers that exist in employment, public transportation, housing, recreation and communication; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital status, family status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences or level of literacy. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 27 to June 2, 2002 as "National Access Awareness Week" and encourage everyone to support equal rights for persons with disabilities. |
