"World No Tobacco Day"

May 31, 2002

WHEREAS: World No Tobacco Day is celebrated every year on May 31. The international theme for this year, set by the World Health Organization (WHO), is "Tobacco Free Sports"; and
WHEREAS: this yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what the WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and protect future generations; and
WHEREAS: World No Tobacco Day is organized by the WHO and events take place on a global level, but it is the actions of local municipalities that are key to the success of this international campaign; and
WHEREAS: the City of Toronto is committed to reducing the harmful effects of second-hand smoke on children, non-smokers and workers in public places and World No Tobacco Day falls on the eve of Toronto's No Smoking By-law; and
WHEREAS: Toronto Public Health promotes awareness of the serious health concerns of second-hand smoke and encourages smoke free living through Toronto's No Smoking By-law and a variety of programs and activities.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 31, 2002 as "World No Tobacco Day" in the City of Toronto, and support healthy smoke-free living for everyone.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
