"Opera Month"

April 2002

WHEREAS: the arts are a unifying force that enhance our quality of life and add to the cultural and social development of our communities; and
WHEREAS: Canadian opera companies inspire and enrich the lives of hundreds of thousands of people through passionate performances, innovative productions and educational outreach; and
WHEREAS: Opera Conference 2002 is a collaboration by The Professional Opera Companies of Canada, Opera America and Opera Volunteers International, that takes place in Toronto to celebrate opera in Canada; and
WHEREAS: Opera Conference 2002, jointly hosted by The Canadian Opera Company, Autumn Leaf Performance, Opera Atelier, Opera Ontario, The Queen of Puddings Music Theatre Company, Soundstreams Canada and Tapestry New Opera Works, promises to be one of the most important in recent years; and
WHEREAS: Opera Conference 2002 is centred within the City's first "Opera Festival 2002", which includes exciting performances by The Canadian Opera Company, Autumn Leaf Performance, Opera Atelier, Opera Ontario, Tapestry New Opera Works and showcases outstanding Canadian talent.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim April 2002 as "Opera Month" to recognize the cultural significance and importance of opera.
