the poppy is a symbol we proudly wear in tribute to those many brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice; and
WHEREAS:
the incredible loss of life in wartime must never be forgotten and it is important that we honour their memory; and
WHEREAS:
it is remembering the many Canadians who gave their lives for our country that we commit ourselves to lasting peace at home and around the world; and
WHEREAS:
on November 11th each year, we come together to remember and thank those who fought for peace and freedom overseas and on the home front and resolve that the lessons of the past must never be repeated.
NOW,
THEREFORE:
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim November 2 to 11, 2002 as "Poppy Weeks."
