"Refugee Rights Awareness Week"
April 1 to 7, 2002
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and is home to immigrants and refugees from around the world; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the people of Toronto and City Council are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace; and on April 4th, 1985, the Supreme Court of Canada's ruling in the Singh case, recognized the rights of refugee claimants to an oral hearing under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital status, family status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliations, religious affiliation, record of offences or level of literacy; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council is committed to supporting the settlement and integration of refugees and immigrants in all aspects of community life, and will continue its efforts to strengthen partnerships with the Federal and Provincial governments, and community organizations, as well as the public and private sectors, to honour and protect the rights of all refugees and immigrants. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim April 1 to 7, 2002 as "Refugee Rights Awareness Week". |
