"School Bus Safety Week"
October 20 to 26, 2002
| WHEREAS: |
children are our most precious asset and the City of Toronto and the province of Ontario have designated the week of October 20-26, 2002 as "School Bus Safety Week"; and |
| WHEREAS: |
each school day 800,000 students in Ontario travel to and from school aboard a school bus, and Transport Canada statistics prove that students who ride the school bus are 16 times safer than those travelling to school by car; and |
| WHEREAS: |
in an effort to raise awareness among the motoring public, the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the York Region Public School Board, the Canadian Safe School Network, Crayola and Laidlaw Education Services, are partnering in the second annual "Keeping Young Artists Safe" school bus safety poster contest; and |
| WHEREAS: |
with the theme "Stay back, stay back from the yellow and black", this year's poster safety contest provides an opportunity for young students to exhibit their creativity and build self-esteem, and the winning students and their classmates being awarded special gift packs. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 20 to 26, 2002 as "School Bus Safety Week", and encourage all residents to recognize school bus drivers, the school district, school bus providers and corporate sponsors, for their efforts in providing safe transportation for our children. |
