"Self-Help Awareness Week"

November 25 to 29, 2002

WHEREAS: for over 15 years, the Self-Help Resource Centre has been assisting the community by providing information and referral services to self-help and mutual aid groups with links to centres across Toronto; and
WHEREAS: self-help and mutual aid groups are voluntary, peer-led groups of individuals who come together to share common experiences, knowledge or concerns and the opportunity to help themselves and each other; and
WHEREAS: the Self-Help Resource Centre assists new groups in starting up, provides on-going support to established groups, and offers regular workshops, outreach programs, resources and newletters to promote the goals of the organization and the importance of self-help and mutual aid strategies; and
WHEREAS: the Self-Help Resource Centre and community partners have scheduled week long activities to increase awareness about self-help/mutual aid to make people in diverse communities aware of the services, benefits and support available to them.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim November 25 to 29, 2002 as "Self-Help Awareness Week" in the City of Toronto, and encourage all residents to learn more about this organization and the services it provides.
