"SIDS Awareness Month"

October 2002

WHEREAS: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome remains both unpredictable and unpreventable and as a result, every week two apparently healthy liveborn infants in Canada die suddenly and unexpectedly due to SIDS; and
WHEREAS: the families of these infants require current, accurate information and emotional support to help them cope with the death of their child. The Canadian Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths is the only organization solely dedicated to providing essential services to the many Canadians affected annually; and
WHEREAS: The Canadian Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths develops and disseminates vital information to SIDS families, health professionals, emergency response personnel, emergency medical technicians, funeral directors, bereavement counsellors and all those professions involved with a SIDS death; and
WHEREAS: The Canadian Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths promotes and supports research into the cause of this mysterious killer of Canadian infants. All Canadians should be concerned about the immense annual loss of potential which results from the unexplained deaths of our country's infants from SIDS.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 2002 as "SIDS Awareness Month" in the City of Toronto.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
