"Toronto Remembers"
June 6, 2002
| WHEREAS: |
fifty-eight years ago today, the Allied invasion of Normandy was a daring and remarkable military feat that marked a turning point in the course of World War II; and |
| WHEREAS: |
on June 6, 1944 hundreds of thousands of men and women took part in what became the largest military invasion in history. The success of Operation Overlord led to the liberation of Occupied Europe and the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany; and |
| WHEREAS: |
we are enormously proud of the fact that Canadians made up fully one-third of the combined air, naval and group forces taking part in the invasion; and |
| WHEREAS: |
units of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and the 4th Canadian Armoured Brigade, were among those who stormed ashore that fateful morning. Canadian paratroopers were among the first to land in France in the early hours, and over fifty ships of the royal Canadian Navy, including HMCS Haida and thirty-seven squadrons of the Royal Canadian Air Force took part; and |
| WHEREAS: |
we pay tribute to D-Day veterans and to all Canadians who served overseas and on the homefront during World War II by remembering their courage and the sacrifices they made. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.4 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 6, 2002 as "Toronto Remembers" in honour of our brave D-Day veterans and all Canadians who fought for peace and freedom. |
