"Volunteer Week"

April 21 to 27, 2002

WHEREAS: the City of Toronto derives much of its strength, beauty and unique character from the outstanding contributions made by thousands of residents who volunteer in every facet of our everyday lives and are a vital part of many groups and organizations; and
WHEREAS: volunteers of all ages, economic and cultural backgrounds and walks of life, give generously of their talent, spirit, energy and the most important gift of all, their time, to assist individuals and families in our community; and
WHEREAS: volunteers fulfill an endless range of duties and contribute their time to read to the blind, visit the elderly, provide transportation to the disabled, deliver meals to shut-ins and provide a multitude of other services and activities that make a real difference in many lives; and
WHEREAS: the Volunteer Centre of Toronto enables and encourages residents to serve our community and assists organizations and agencies to work effectively with volunteers.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim April 21 - 27, 2002 as "Volunteer Week" to recognize the outstanding contributions made by thousands of volunteers who represent the "heart and soul" of our City, and the tremendous efforts and commitment of the Volunteer Centre of Toronto.
