"Walk to School Day"

October 2, 2002

WHEREAS: in the City of Toronto and around the world, October 2, 2002, has been designated "Walk to School Day"; and
WHEREAS: children and youth are our most precious asset and the need to provide a safe and healthy environment is fundamental to their happiness, well-being and success; and
WHEREAS: this annual event takes place across Canada, North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and will focus on the benefits of walking rather than driving to school, creating cleaner, safer and environmentally healthier neighbourhoods for our children; and
WHEREAS: this day affords parents the opportunity to spend more time with their children, reduces car use and traffic hazards, promotes physical activity and contributes to a safer community.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 2, 2002 as "Walk to School Day" in the City of Toronto and encourage everyone to participate in this very worthwhile event.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
