"Week of the Child"

October 20 to 26, 2002

WHEREAS: children are our most precious resource and their health and well-being is our responsibility. We must never ignore, forget or overlook our obligation to provide them with the basic necessities of life; and
WHEREAS: the Association of Early Childhood Educators, in celebration of the 22nd anniversary of the "Week of the Child" with the theme "Cherish the Children", is organizing a wide variety of events and activities; and
WHEREAS: children are the future and we must encourage them to become strong, productive and caring people. This week will focus on the needs, rights and interests of children, as well as increase awareness of the value of quality early childhood education; and
WHEREAS: the "Week of the Child" is an excellent opportunity to renew our commitment to improving the prospects for all children and their families, and care for and educate our future adults, parents and leaders.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 20 to 26, 2002 as "Week of the Child" and encourage all adults and children to participate in the events planned to celebrate this week.
