"International Women's Day"

March 8, 2002

WHEREAS: International Women's Day recognizes and celebrates the tremendous contributions and achievements of women in our society; and
WHEREAS: in 1975, the United Nations proclaimed March 8 as International Women's Day to commemorate the deaths of 145 mostly poor immigrant women, who were killed in a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York City on March 25, 1911; and
WHEREAS: Toronto City Council and the people of our City are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace; and
WHEREAS: the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identification, age, marital status, family status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences or level of literacy.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim March 8, 2002 as "International Women's Day" to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women, and the contribution they make to the success and vitality of the City of Toronto.
