"World Partnership Walk Day"
May 26, 2002
| WHEREAS: |
during the past 18 years, the Partnership Walk has grown from modest beginnings to become the largest annual event in Canada that supports international development in an effort to eradicate global poverty; and |
| WHEREAS: |
thousands of people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life, in cities across Canada, will participate in this year's event as volunteers, walkers and sponsors, to show their support for those less fortunate in the global community; and |
| WHEREAS: |
with the theme "Creating Smart Solutions to Global Poverty", the primary objective of the Walk is to increase greater public awareness and raise funds to help eradicate global poverty through international development; and |
| WHEREAS: |
since its inception, this initiative of the Aga Kan Foundation Canada has raised more than $17 million with every dollar being directed towards international development to support and create opportunities for those less fortunate in communities around the world. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 26, 2002 as "World Partnership Walk Day" to recognize the tremendous contribution and commitment of everyone involved with this very worthy cause. |
