Proclamation
"Louis Riel Day"
November 16, 2004

WHEREAS: the Métis Nation are recognized in the Constitution Act 1982 as one of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples with a homeland across Canada.
To the Métis Nation, Louis Riel was a great humanitarian, elder and leader.
November 16th is recognized as “Louis Riel Day” by the Métis Nation who celebrate their national holiday with commemorative ceremonies and events at various locations across Canada including Toronto City Hall.
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace.
The City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender, identity, age, marital status, family status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences or level of literacy.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim November 16, 2004 as "Louis Riel Day" in the City of Toronto to recognize his contribution and the contribution of the Métis Nation to the building of Canada.
