Whereas the rapid development of technology and widespread use of the Internet has raised data and privacy issues in the lives of all people, at work, in their business relations, travel and in purchasing goods and services.
Respect for the privacy of the individual is a fundamental component of a functioning, democratic society. Many residents are unaware of their privacy rights and of specific steps they can take to help ensure the protection of their personal information online.
Data Privacy Day, in accordance with the Canadian Association of Professional Access and Privacy Administrators, constitutes an international collaboration and a nationwide and province-wide effort to raise awareness of privacy and data protection and to inform citizens of their rights and of good practices.
The celebration of Data Privacy Day will encourage people to be aware of data privacy concerns and take steps to protect their personal online information and other information that may be affected.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim January 28, 2010 as "Data Privacy Day" in the City of Toronto.
