Toronto Centre for the Arts Board of Directors

(Formerly North York Performing Arts Centre)

The board-specific requirements set out below reflect the requirements approved by Council in September 2006.


Agency profile

The Toronto Centre for the Arts (formerly the North York Performing Arts Centre) is the only major cultural facility located north of Bloor Street in Toronto. It includes three performing arts spaces: the Main Stage (1,800 seats), the George Weston Recital Hall (1,032 seats), the Studio Theatre (200 seats) and an exhibition space which was formerly the home of the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. Designed by Zeidler/Roberts, all are high quality venues. The Weston Recital Hall is well known for its superb acoustics and is often used for unamplified music concerts.


Board responsibilities

The Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the business and affairs of the Centre, including maintaining, operating, managing, marketing and promoting the Centre as an artistic, cultural, social, educational and recreational facility for the benefit of the public.


Term of office

Four years.


Composition

The board consists of 12 members:

  • the Mayor or a designate appointed by the Mayor
  • 3 members of Council appointed by City Council
  • 8 citizen members

Qualifications

In addition to the general eligibility requirements set out in the Public Appointments Policy, citizen appointees to the Board are also to collectively demonstrate a range of qualifications including:

  • financial management
  • hospitality services
  • knowledge of the performing arts industry and facilities management
  • fundraising
  • marketing and sponsorship
  • law, or
  • expertise and linkages in the diverse cultural community.

A youthful perspective (age range 18 to 30) is a desired qualification for at least one member of the board.


Meetings

The Board meets monthly or at the call of the Chair


Remuneration

No remuneration is paid to board members


Nomination process - advertised recruitment

The citizen members are recruited through City-wide media advertising and eligible candidates are screened against Council approved qualifications by a City staff team. The Civic Appointments Committee selects a short list of candidates, conducts interviews or other means of selecting appointees, and nominates candidates as members and the Chair of the Board for appointment by City Council.
