* * Safety Audits - Task Force on Community Safety *
* *

The Safety Audit initiative was established in response to recommendations from the 1999 Task Force on Community Safety report titled, Toronto. My City. A Safe City. The mandate of the initiative was to increase community-led safety audits, increase awareness of safety audits, provide consistent and timely responses to recommendations arising from safety audits and establish a co-ordinated approach to safety audits.

The Task Force established a Safety Audit Working Group over 2002 to report both short-term and long-term recommendations for the City to develop, implement and promote a safety audit program. The safety audit program would take time to implement and require dedicated funds and staff resources to achieve all the recommended goals. Council approved these resources in 2002 to allow staff more time to design, develop and co-ordinate a city-wide safety audit program.

Mandate
City staff established the interdepartmental Safety Audit Staff Reference Group to:

  • ensure follow-up to safety audits;
  • develop protocols for disseminating and responding to future audits;
  • design a database response system to capture all audit information relevant to the City of Toronto; and
  • offer a more co-ordinated City response to safety audits.

The long-term goal of the safety audit program is to increase the number of safety audits across the City, decrease the response time to recommendations arising from safety audits and document some of the many community-led safety audit success stories
