Current Sign By-laws in Toronto
There are currently 6 comprehensive sign by-laws across the City of Toronto; one sign by-law for each of the former municipalities. In addition to these by-laws, there are many district specific regulations that set forth additional requirements for permanent signs.
Each of these by-laws have different definitions and regulations for permanent signs, creating a situation where the same type of sign is defined as something different in each of the by-laws, and has different regulations governing it.
For example - This sign would be subject to the following regulations under the former municipalities:
An interdepartmental Steering Committee was created in 2006 for the purpose of overseeing and guiding the creation of a consolidated sign by-law. This Steering Committee has representatives from: Toronto Building; City Planning; Municipal Licensing and Standards; and Transportation Services.
Toronto Building is leading the development of a new consolidated sign by-law to replace the existing by-laws.
