Customized training projects

About customized training projects
Employment and Social Services can work with training providers and employers to develop one-time training projects customized to meet the needs of employers and job seekers. These projects are known as Local Initiatives.

The goals of Local Initiatives are to:

  • respond quickly to the hiring needs of employers
  • work with employers who require employees with specific job skills, and
  • provide people who are receiving Ontario Works benefits with the skills training required to fill these vacancies.

If you are a job seeker, go to an Employment Centre or contact your caseworker to find out about employment or training opportunities.

Information for training providers
Through a Local Initiative, training providers with employer partners can receive funding to provide services to job seekers and employers. These services are designed to meet the employers’ hiring needs and can include:

    • screening
    • job placement
    • post-hiring supports
    • life skills coaching, and
    • skill training

If your organization is interested in finding out more about Local Initiatives, you can read the specific program criteria in the project information guide and proposal template. PDF logo

To get involved, contact the Community and Labour Market Manager at an Employment and Social Services office.

If your organization does not have an employer partner but is interested in providing skill training to people who receive Ontario Works benefits, it may be possible for you to do so through the Request for Proposal (RFP) Process.

Information for employers
Employment and Social Services supports employers to meet emerging hiring needs. Through a Local Initiative, new employees can be screened and receive customized training based on your requirements.

In some cases, employers hiring through a Local Initiative can also access supports including financial incentives.

If you are an employer wishing to become involved in a Local Initiative, please contact the Employer Hotline at 416-397-JOBS (5627) or email us.
