City Hall 40th Anniversary

8:30 - 10 pm

The September 1965 opening of the newly designed City Hall launched Toronto into an era of architectural experimentation. Finnish Architect Viljo Revell gave Toronto one of the world's most distinctive civic symbols and helped to create an instantly recognizable and attractive cityscape.

Forty years later Toronto marked the anniversary of City Hall with a spectacular evening celebration hosted by Mayor David Miller.

performances by more than 100
local and international artists,
culminating with the production
Of Angels and Light by Italy's
Studio Festi and presented in
collaboration with members of
Toronto's Circus Orange,
Danny Grossman Dance
Company
, Dance Theatre David
Earle
, High Strung Aerial Dance,
Kaeja d'Dance and The School of the
Toronto Dance Theatre
created specifically
for Nathan Phillips Square.


8:30 to 9 pm
Music!
Members of The Glenn Gould School at The Royal Conservatory of Music featuring brass, strings, woodwinds and vocal performers blanket Nathan Phillips Square with sweet sounds.

Dance!
Feature performers included bharatnatyam dancer Nova Bhattacharya accompanied by live tabla music, the shebang! break dance crew, flamenco dancer Carmen Romero with guitarist Miguel de la Bastide, contemporary dancer Julia Aplin, and Toronto-based tap dance company What's on? TAP!

Art!
Live cello by Toronto artist Dave Atwell to the dance moves of Heather Hammond on canvas. The Art Gallery of Ontario displayed their traveling community art mural including panels from Niiwin Dabaagjimowin, Our Stories were displayed. This eighty-foot mural depicts the narratives of the Anishnaabe people of Ontario from the beginning of time to present day.

City Hall's 40th Anniversary celebration launched the Live With Culture campaign, a 16 month celebration of Toronto's cultural communities.
