  Working together to preserve
Riverdale history.

The City of Toronto and Bridgepoint Health are working together to preserve a piece of Toronto’s history – the St. Matthews Lawn Bowling Club House.

The club house was built south of the Old Don Jail along Gerrard Street East. This spring, the club house will be moved to the south end of Riverdale Park. The final location will be at Broadview Avenue, opposite Langley Avenue. The City will fully restore the club house building, and this work will be completed in 2010.

In selecting the ideal location for the club house, the City made an archaeological discovery. The House of Refuge, sometimes referred to as the House of Industry – which stood on the site from 1859 to 1894 – was a trade school and was used as a hospital during smallpox outbreaks. The City conducted an archaeological survey at the location in the spring of 2009 to record the history found at the site.

A new use for the club house will be determined in the future. There will be public engagement on its future use.
