How does the City ensure the personal information on my old cell phone and laptop will not be used by anyone else?
The City is not responsible for personal information contained on your cell phone and other electronic devices. You need to remove all personal information (e.g. remove SIM card/hard drive or have hard drive professionally wiped clean) before putting your electronics out for pick-up. Find out how (PDF).

Proper set out
Set these items out for pick-up 0.5 metre (2 feet) away from your Garbage Bin. Make sure the items can be seen by the collections crews. Large items, such as computer monitors and televisions, can be put on the ground. Smaller items, such as cell phones, should be put in a clear plastic bag or in an open cardboard box (it is preferable if small items are not put out as single items). If the weather is bad, please put electronics out on the next Garbage Bin collection day. Drop-off Depots and Community Environment Days continue to accept these items.

Is this program mandatory and if so, is there a collection charge?
No the program is not mandatory, however, it will help you reduce the amount of waste generated, which affects your Solid Waste fees. This special collection is a free service. It's the City's goal to achieve 70% waste diversion from landfill. This is a program aimed at keeping electronic waste out of landfill sites and either recycled or safely disposed of.
Back to topImportant Information for Property Managers of Apartments / Condos with curbside collection
I am the property manager for a multi-residential building and I received a letter from the City advising me to order green E-Waste bags for residents to use to dispose of electronics items. How do I order bags?
Please call 311 to place an order. You will need your water/waste utility account number to place an order.
How many bags should I order for the building?
We suggest you order up to one (1) E-waste Bag for each unit in your building. When you, or the person you specify, receive the E-waste bags you should distribute them to each unit in the building.
When will I receive the new E-Waste Bags?
Once you have placed an order, E-Waste bags will be mailed to the address and person specified on your order. In the meantime, we recommend waiting until you have accumulated a few smaller items and then placing them out together at your collection point inside an open cardboard box on garbage days. Please ensure box of electronics is visible at your collection point. In winter storms, we ask that you hold onto items until it’s clear of snow and ice. Back to top
