The Accessible Taxicab Driver Course is a 5-day course designed to train current taxicab drivers who wish to drive Accessible Taxicabs in the City of Toronto.
Course Prerequisites
Drivers who wish to drive Accessible taxicabs must meet the following criteria:
- hold a valid Ontario Driver's Licence;
- submit a completed application form along with the corresponding fee.
To become an Accessible taxicab owner you must be on the Drivers' List. Individuals are selected as licenses are issued on the basis of their seniority on the list. For a taxicab driver to have his or her name placed on the City of Toronto Drivers' List, he or she must meet the following criteria:
- The applicant must have been working as a licensed taxicab driver on a full-time basis in the three-year period immediately preceding his or her application;
- The applicant must not have been an owner or have held an interest in a company that owns licensed taxicabs in the five-year period immediately preceding his or her application;
- The applicant must file a Statutory Declaration as required by the Municipal Licensing and Standards Division.
Course Content
Both the drivers and owners courses cover the following topics in modular form:
- Human Rights and Women in Society;
- Chapter 545 of the City of Toronto Municipal Code as well as other relevant laws and regulations;
- Dealing with Passengers with Disabilities;
- Equipment Handling and Passenger Assistance;
- Defensive Driving;
- Vehicle Care and Maintenance;
- Business Management;
- Personal Financial Planning.
In addition, the owners course places emphasis on the roles, duties and responsibilities of Accessible owner/operators. Both courses, however, include an in-class practical component.
Passing Requirements
In order to successfully complete the course students must:
- meet minimum attendance requirements;
- achieve a grade of 80% or better on all examinations administered;
- achieve a grade of 100% on the practical assessment.
Obtaining Your Licence
Upon successfully completing the Accessible Taxicab Owner/Driver Course, a taxicab driver may obtain his or her Accessible taxicab owner's licence/accessible licence endorsement by attending the offices of the Municipal Licensing and Standards and presenting the following documentation:
- valid Ontario Driver's Licence (Class G);
- medical certificate (provided by Municipal Licensing and Standards) and completed by a physician of your choice;
- Ontario Driver's Abstract (no more than 30 days old);
- First Aid / CPR Certificate.
Fees
Fee for the Accessible Course is $446.14.
