The Ambassador Taxicab Owner Course is a 40-day program designed to train and upgrade the skill set of current taxicab drivers who wish to own and operate an Ambassador Taxicab in the City of Toronto.
Course Prerequisites
To become an Ambassador Taxicab Owner you must be on the Drivers List. As licenses are issued, individuals are selected based on their seniority on the list. To be placed on the Drivers List, taxicab drivers must meet the following criteria:
- The applicant must have been working as a licensed taxicab driver on a full-time basis in the three-year period immediately preceding his or her application;
- The applicant must not have been an owner or have held an interest in a company that owns licensed taxicabs in the five-year period immediately preceding his or her application;
- The applicant must file an annual Statutory Declaration as required by the Municipal Licensing and Standards Division.
Course Content
The Ambassador Course includes 40 half-day sessions covering the following topics in modular form:
- Professional Customer Service;
- Chapter 545 of the City of Toronto Municipal Code as well as other relevant laws and regulations;
- Defensive Driving;
- Geography and Route Planning;
- Serving Passengers with Disabilities;
- Driver and Passenger Safety;
- Business Management;
- Personal Financial Planning;
- Marketing;
- Vehicle Care and Maintenance.
Passing Requirements
In order to successfully complete the course students must:
- meet minimum attendance requirements;
- achieve a grade of 80% or better on all examinations administered;
- successfully complete the in-car rough weather driving component.
Obtaining Your Licence
Upon successfully completing the Ambassador Taxicab Owner Course (including the in-car rough weather driving course), a taxicab driver may obtain his or her Ambassador taxicab owner's licence by attending the offices of Licensing Services and presenting the following documentation:
- valid Ontario Driver's Licence (Class G);
- medical certificate (provided by the Licensing Unit and filled out by a physician of your choice);
- Ontario Driver's Abstract (no more than 30 days old);
- First Aid / CPR Certificate.

2005 fees for each of the Ambassador Course's components were as follows:
- Ambassador Course $697.00
- First Aid / CPR 50.00
- In-car Course 195.00
Fees for subsequent courses are subject to review and may vary from those of previous years.
