Provincial tax credits

Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit (OFTTC)
The OFTTC is a refundable tax credit available to eligible Ontario-based, Canadian-owned and controlled corporations for eligible film and television productions. The benefits are:

  • 35% of the eligible labour expenditures.
  • 10% regional bonus on Ontario labour expenditures for productions shot entirely outside of the Greater Toronto Region.
  • an enhanced credit rate of 40% on the first $240,000 of qualifying labour expenditure is available for first-time producers.

Ontario Computer Animation and Special Effects Tax Credit (OCASE)
The OCASE is a refundable tax credit available to Canadian Corporations that are Canadian or foreign-owned. OCASE supports eligible computer animation and special effects activities carried out in Ontario. The benefits are:

  • 20% of eligible labour expenditures incurred by Ontario companies as well as to arm’s-length incorporated individuals and unincorporated individuals and partnerships providing freelance services.
  • The ability to claim the credit in addition to the OPSTC.

Ontario Production Services Tax Credit (OPSTC)
The OPSTC is a refundable tax credit, available to Canadian Corporations that are Canadian or foreign-owned, for eligible Ontario labour and other production expenditures incurred during film or television productions. The benefits are:

  • 25% for all qualifying production costs including qualifying labour costs, purchase or rental of tangible properties such as equipment and studio rentals.
  • No cap on the amount of eligible labour or production expenditures.
  • No limit to the number of productions that can qualify.
  • The OPSTC can be combined with the federal Film or Video Production Services Tax Credit of 16% of qualified Canadian labour expenditures. There are no per project or annual corporate tax credit limits.

Federal tax credits
 
The Film or Video Production Services Tax Credit (PSTC) is a refundable tax credit offered by the Department of Canadian Heritage. The PSTC is available to eligible Canadian as well as foreign-based film producers and/or production companies. Its benefit is:  

  • 16% of eligible costs of qualified Canadian labour expenditures.

The Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit (CPTC) is a refundable tax credit offered by the Department of Canadian Heritage and is available to Canadian productions. Its benefit is:

  • 25% of eligible salary expenditures on wages and remuneration.
