Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment's Team Up Foundation, the Toronto Football Club, KIA Canada and the City of Toronto officially opened the newly refurbished soccer pitch at Sorauren Park with a kick-off on August 9th, 2011.
Community members along with City of Toronto campers; players from local soccer associations; Councillor Norn Kelly (Ward 40 – Scarborough Agincourt); Michael Bartlett, Executive Director of the Team Up Foundation and Robert Staffieri, Marketing Director of Kia Canada Inc.; joined the Toronto FC team on field to welcome the community back to their park. Sorauren underwent a major transformation over the past year with the soccer pitch refurbishment and a new dog park completed early this year.
This is the second pitch to be refurbished in the multi-year partnership with the Team Up Foundation and Toronto FC, following last summer's upgrade of G. Ross Lord Park in the North District. Since 2005, Maple Leafs Sport & Entertainment through the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors has partnered with the City to refurbish ice rinks and basketball courts in communities across Toronto.
"Partnering with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment’s Team Up Foundation and their commitment to Sorauren Park's soccer pitch has enabled us to engage even more community members to participate in activities that lead to a sense of unity, encourage healthy development and promote active living," said Councillor Kelly, Chair, Parks and Environment Committee. "Our focus is on the quality of life for all Torontonians."
