New Residential Front Yard and Boulevard Parking Regulation

"Parking on Residential Front Yards and Boulevards"

On Monday April 16, 2007, a new by-law, “Parking on Residential Front Yards and Boulevards, City of Toronto Municipal Code, Chapter 918,” came into effect.

Background
Residential front yard parking, in its various forms, essentially allows for residents to have a designated parking space located in front of the main wall of their residence, either entirely on the private property, entirely within the City-owned public boulevard or a combination thereof. This mode of parking was regulated by the former municipalities prior to amalgamation.

Front yard parking has become more common in the more densely built areas of the City as parking demand has increasingly exceeded the ability to accommodate on-site residential parking supply.

Many concerns have been expressed over the years about the negative impacts and environmental implications of front yard parking, including the detrimental impact on neighbourhood streetscapes, the elimination of on-street parking, interference with pedestrian activity, the elimination of landscaped open space, stress on trees and storm water run-off.

What's new
Our website will be undergoing changes to reflect the new by-law and provide the information required to help you through the process. In the meantime, please access the new by-law.
Please Note: City Council at it's meeting of March 5-8, 2007 imposed a moratorium on accepting any front yard parking applications in Ward 14, Parkdale-High Park. This moratorium will become part of the front yard parking prohibition in the new Code Chapter 918, under § 918-5 B.
