The Butternut tree (Juglans cinerea) is listed as an endangered species in the Provincial Endangered Species Act, 2007.

The City of Toronto cannot authorize any requests for permission to injure or remove butternut trees that are received under the provisions of the Trees on City Streets By-law, Private Tree Protection By-law and Ravine and Natural Feature Protection By-law.
