Trees can look great with lights placed in them in the winter. During the spring, summer and fall, the trees need to grow without restrictions so that they can provide year round aesthetic and environmental benefits.

City Tree Lighting - What not to Do!
Please do not wrap decorative lights around the stem or branches of trees.

City Tree Lights - What not to Do!

Wrapping lights around the stem and branches of a young tree can result in branches being broken during the installation and removal of the lights. This could ultimately cause the tree to die.

The lights must also be removed during the tree's growing season. If left in place when the tree is actively growing, the electrical wires get embedded into the bark, impeding the movement of nutrients and water.

Alternative to Wrapping of Decorative Lighting
As an alternative to wrapping the lights around the stem and branches, the lights can be strung along or draped on the branches, or a spotlight could be utilized for lighting up the tree in winter.
