Connecting business to brand
When it comes to helping companies 'connect' with their employees, customers and business community, Brand Matters has found that being in Toronto is not just a good fit, it makes good business sense.

Founded by Patricia McQuillan in May 2000, Brand Matters is a brand-consulting firm that offers services and perspectives beyond those of a traditional advertising agency or management consultancy. The company consults to a wide range of organizations in industries such as banking, consumer products, government, health care, insurance, media, investment services, not-for-profit and technology.

Though the client base is broad the challenge faced by these companies - that is to have their brand stand out against the crowd - is strikingly similar. As Ms. McQuillan notes, "For companies to effectively build their brand, they must first diagnose their brand from the perspective of their stakeholders. We work with our clients to ensure that they build their brand with broad employee support and senior management buy-in."

For Brand Matters the key to doing this is to develop a winning brand strategy for clients that will clearly differentiate them from their competitors. And critical to this is both access to resources and clients who share the understanding and passion for what it takes to move a business forward.

By enabling its clients to succeed, Brand Matters has itself succeeded - revenue growth above 100% for the past few years. Growth that came after the company returned to Toronto from a move beyond the City's borders.

The return to Toronto allowed Ms. McQuillan to gain access to the elements she needed.

"Being in Toronto enables us to attract the best industry suppliers, draw upon an abundant talent pool and utilize a wealth of core business services," she says. "These things are integral to our success and our ability to provide top calibre service for our clients."

"Moreover," McQuillan adds, "the networking in Toronto is second to none. I have made more business contacts in Toronto that have led me directly to clients or to exceptional resources. So we knew we could provide our services and that we could find the right clients to develop new business opportunities."

Ms. McQuillan and Brand Matters, participate as industry leaders through involvement on industry Councils and Boards such as the MS Society Board (Toronto), American Marketing Association (Toronto Chapter) and the Canadian Marketing Association's Strategic Branding and Planning Council.
