Project Update - June 2009
The Front Street Extension has been removed from the City's Official Plan. The City is no longer pursuing Environmental Assessment approval for this project.

The Project
The Front Street Extension project is the first of the Waterfront Revitalization Priority Projects to formally launch its environmental assessment (EA) planning process. The study that is currently underway is seeking both federal and provincial EA approvals as well as developing a preliminary design for the recommended alignment. The Front Street Extension has a long history within the City of Toronto. The concept of the Front Street Extension was first proposed in 1983 by the Central Waterfront Transportation Study, an EA Study as completed and approved in 1989 and an Addendum to the 1989 Study was approved in 1997. The current initiative is an Addendum to the approved 1989 Environmental Study Report.

The project encompasses a two-kilometre extension of Front Street from its current western terminus at Bathurst Street to Dufferin Street, including connections to and from the Gardiner Expressway near Exhibition Place. The overall objective of the project is to provide an alternate route into the central area from the west, off-loading traffic from the Gardiner Expressway and the north-south streets in the downtown core. The extension also will include bicycle lanes, sidewalks and landscaped boulevards.

The public is being consulted at key points through out the development and assessment of alternatives for the Front Street Extension. Public open houses, presentations, e-mail and mail communications, comment response documentation, and stakeholder meetings have been cornerstones of consultation efforts.
