The City of Toronto is currently rehabilitating Leaside Bridge. The Leaside Bridge is located between Millwood Road and Donlands Avenue and Pape Avenue, over the Don Valley.
New construction
dates
The original Tender Call for Leaside Bridge Reconstruction was cancelled
and replace by two separate Tender Calls. Both contract packages
have now been awarded.
Work involving
the first contract consisted mainly of work beneath the deck and
was completed in 2004 with the second contract package beginning
in May 2005. This work will be most visible to the public travelling
on the bridge. A construction notice will be distributed to the
public in mid April, 2005, approximately one month prior to the
start of construction.
The City will be carrying out the following work
- complete
concrete deck replacement;
- strengthening
of the structural steel superstructure to meet the current Canadian
Highway Bridge Design Code requirements;
- substructure
modifications and repairs;
- replacement
of the waterproofing and asphalt paving;
- new barrier
walls and approach slabs; and
- replacement
of the bridge railings with decorative concrete railings that
conform to safety code.

Construction
impacts
During construction, there will be periods where the bridge
will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction. Additional
lanes of traffic will be added as can be accommodated by the work
plan and traffic staging.
Construction
schedule
Construction work carried out below deck began in 2004 and consisted
of steel strengthening and relocation of utilities. The majority
of the deck and sidewalk construction however, will occur between
May 2005 and late 2006.
Leaside Bridge
recognized as a Heritage structure
As of March 2004, the Leaside Bridge has been included on the official
list - City of Toronto Inventory of Heritage Properties, for its
cultural resource value or interest. The City's Heritage and Culture
Division have advised on appropriate railing design and signage.
