The Project
The
City of Toronto Works Committee and Etobicoke Community Council
have voted in favour of a standard 9.1 metre cross section for phases
IV and V of Royal York Road reconstruction.
Royal York Road, between the Mimico Creek Bridge and Ashley Road, has been assessed by the City as being in poor condition with ongoing deterioration. The roadway requires attention and has been designated for reconstruction/rehabilitation. Similarly, portions of the underground municipal infrastructure need replacement.
Description
of Reconstruction/Rehabilitation
Road reconstruction from Mimico Creek Bridge to Usher Avenue includes
excavation of the old roadway, construction of new curb and gutter
and subdrains where appropriate, new sidewalk, repair of the existing
sidewalk, new roadway construction and asphalt paving, and restoration
of driveways and boulevards. Road rehabilitation from Usher Avenue
to Ashley Road includes removal of the asphalt road surface, repairs
to underlying road structure, new asphalt overlay, repairs to the
existing curb and sidewalks and boulevard restoration. In conjunction
with the roadwork, certain sections of storm and sanitary sewer
will be replaced and a new watermain installed from Mimico Creek
to Ashley Road. Storm water management will be implemented where
soil conditions permit. All construction work will be carried out
in a co-ordinated manner to reduce inconvenience to the public.
Safety
Audit
In advance of the preliminary project design stage, the City carried
out a road safety audit for Royal York Road. This audit assessed
existing road conditions and requirements for the safety of all
road users. The safety
audit (PDF) will be used to inform the
project design team of all important safety issues on Royal York
Road.
Tree
Audit
The City is also very sensitive to the preservation and protection
of trees on Royal York Road. Prior to the detailed design phase
the City is undertaking a full tree audit for Royal York Road.
Enhancements
Community enhancements being considered include new pedestrian access
and streetscaping between Royal York Subway Station and Bloor Street
West, an improved passenger drop-off zone for the subway station,
improvements to the Bloor Street West intersection, reconfiguration
of lanes from Usher Avenue to Ashley Road and new boulevard treatments.
The roadway design will address the needs of all road users including
pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists.
