St. Clair Transit Today

The St. Clair Avenue West Transit Improvement Project consists of the construction of a dedicated right-of-way for streetcars that will improve transit frequency and reliability, along with urban design enhancements and public art along sections of the road.

The first phase of the project was the reconstruction and revitalization of St. Clair Avenue West from Yonge Street to Vaughan Road. The second phase is from Westmount Avenue (just east of Dufferin Street) to McRoberts Avenue (just east of Caledonia Road). The third phase is Vaughn Road to Westmount Avenue. The fourth phase is McRoberts Avenue to Gunns Loop (just west of Keele Street).

Community consultation will continue through the Community Design Consultation Group (CDCG) which was formed by the City of Toronto, the TTC and the Transit Community Liaison Committee (TCLC), as required by the Minister of the Environment. Construction Liaison Committees will be re-established once construction resumes.

Discussions led by City Transportation Services will also continue to look at the feasibility and funding for features such as burying all hydro wires underground, reconstructing the sidewalks, resurfacing the roadway and installing new decorative street lighting at mid-block locations along St. Clair Avenue West.

Toronto's Official Plan, passed by City Council in November 2002, focuses on city-building and identifies St. Clair Avenue West as one of many avenues for future growth. The Official Plan also focuses on high-quality transit on the city's major avenues and making transit a more attractive option for travel. The TTC Ridership Growth Strategy compliments the Official Plan.

St. Clair Avenue West is the first major transit priority project to be considered by Council under the Official Plan.
