The Study
The City of Toronto is looking to construct stormwater treatment
facilities in the Ellis Avenues and Colborne Lodge Drive area. In
2002, a Schedule ‘C’ Class Environmental Assessment Study
was completed that identified a preferred alternative for control
and use of stormwater from the areas drained by Ellis Avenue and
Colborne Lodge Drive storm sewers. The purpose of the plan is to
minimize negative environmental effects and enhance the beneficial
use and quality of stormwater in both natural and built environments.

Map of the study area:

Location of Stormwater Treatment Facilities
Stormwater treatment facilities will include the creation of wetlands/forebays.
Wetlands incorporate plants in shallow pools to remove stormwater
pollutants by settling and biological uptake. Forebays are extra
storage areas provided to trap incoming sediments before they
accumulate in the stormwater wetland.

The stormwater treatment facilities will be located in the following
area:
- the
West (Catfish) Pond
- the southwest
part of Grenadier Pond
- the area
south of Lakeshore Boulevard near the Humber River
- the area
between Lakeshore Boulevard and Gardiner Expressway, west
and east of Colborne Lodge Drive
Oil and grit separators will also be constructed in specified
areas. An oil/grit separator is a structure designed to remove
coarse sediment and oil from stormwater.
Public Information Session
A Public Information Session was held on Wednesday July 27, 2005
at Swansea Town Hall Community Centre. View
Open House flyer (PDF).
The purpose of the session was to provide stakeholders with an
opportunity to view display boards and comment on plans for the
construction of these stormwater treatment facilities. Staff
was also available to answer questions regarding details of the
project.
A copy of the
information panels is provided below (PDF):
